Caring for Your Furry Family

My husband and I have one dog and two cats…they’re quite a handful. The dog, Bogey, my husband adopted from the pound before we met. The cats, Berosus and Pyewacket, we adopted together, partially because our dog needed little brothers. They were rescued kittens brought in for a weekly adoption at PetSmart. It’s very important to us that our pets are healthy and happy—so we completely spoil them, and PetSmart helps us do that.

The cats are pretty easy to care for, they keep each other entertained and the dog keeps them on their toes. We buy them Science Diet dry food for indoor cats and Friskies wet food for a treat—not that they don’t get other treats, they really like Whisker Lickin’s treats and Whiskas cat milk, it’s lactose free so it won’t hurt their tummies. We also get their toys from PetSmart. Berosus likes little plastic toys that bounce for chasing while Pyewacket prefers soft toys stuffed with catnip.

Bogey is a bit more difficult. He just gets so bored when we leave him at home while we go to work—I guess chasing cats only entertains for so long. We keep a supply of dog puzzle toys in the house and give him a different one every day. There’s a Kong hollow chew toy, we fill with peanut butter, a soccer-type ball we stuff with treats, which randomly fall out while he plays. When we noticed he was eating too quickly we started putting his Science Diet dog food in Tug-A-Jug; it’s a plastic bottle that unscrews on the bottom for filling, at the top the neck is protected by a rubber ring, so he can’t break it, and stopped by a rope. To get his food he must play with the rope, as it moves in and out of the bottle food drops out. When he’s motivated he can empty it out in less than half an hour!

Sometimes the toys aren’t enough, and the cats like a break from Bogey from time to time, so we take him to Doggie Daycare at PetSmart. While he’s there he gets to play with the other campers while supervised by PetSmart trainers. We especially like taking him to PetSmart for daycare because they’re willing to make special accommodations—Bogey can’t stand small “yippy” dogs, so they only put him in with other large dogs to play. He’s a Lab/Collie mix, a big ball of energy, but when we pick him up he’s always tuckered out, so we know he had a good time.

There are also daycare add-ons: doggy ice cream, private training, they’ll even wash and groom your dog before your pick up time for a small extra charge. Although, I just found online—at ShopAtHome.com—PetSmart coupons, including one for two free doggy daycare plays when you have your pet groomed at PetSmart!

Once in a while we go out of town, longer than we’re willing to leave any of our pets alone for. The best place for them is PetSmart PetsHotel. They even have separate ventilation for the dog space and cat space, so they won’t smell each other and stress out. PetSmart is the only place I trust to take care of my pets.
